Mission & Vision

The Dark Sky Association is a Portuguese organization that stands as a reference in the protection of the night sky and in the creation of sustainable and regenerative destinations, with a specialization in astrotourism. Beyond preserving natural darkness, it works to enhance the night sky as a strategic asset for territorial development, integrating environmental, cultural, and scientific dimensions. Its work focuses on the creation and development of destinations, advising on solutions to reduce light pollution, and empowering communities, public entities, and private stakeholders to build more sustainable, resilient, and distinctive territories.

As an international reference in this field, the Association develops and manages its own brands associated with territories certified as destinations of excellence for night sky observation. These brands represent rigorous environmental quality standards, a strong commitment to sustainability, and a structured offer of astrotourism experiences, integrating accommodation, activities, training and scientific interpretation.

The mission of the Dark Sky Association is based on three fundamental pillars: protecting the night sky, promoting scientific and cultural knowledge related to the universe, and fostering sustainable development through astrotourism. In this context, the Association works on the creation, development and implementation of astrotourism destinations, collaborating with local communities to generate economic value, preserve natural resources and strengthen territorial identity.

The vision of the Dark Sky Association projects a future in which high-quality night skies are widely recognised, protected and valued as an essential resource for environmental sustainability, human well-being and territorial development. The Association aims to lead, at both national and international levels, the transition towards development models that integrate night sky protection as a structural element of public policy, land management and tourism offer.

In this context, the Association plays a central role as the managing entity of Dark Sky® Alqueva, the first destination in the world certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination, and of the Dark Sky® Portugal Network, a structure that brings together and coordinates different territories committed to protecting the night sky and developing astrotourism.

By articulating environmental conservation, education and sustainable tourism, the Dark Sky Association positions itself as a strategic agent in building a future where access to dark skies is recognised as a collective right and an essential resource for present and future generations. Its work strengthens the connection between science, territory and community, contributing to the recognition of Portugal as a global reference in astrotourism and night sky protection.

Registered Trademarks

Trademarks play a strategic role in the positioning, differentiation and enhancement of tourism destinations, acting as fundamental intangible assets for building reputation, trust and market recognition. In the context of astrotourism and night sky protection, the trademarks associated with the Dark Sky Association represent not only a visual identity, but above all a commitment to high standards of quality, sustainability and authenticity.

Destination brands are particularly relevant, as they function both as a guarantee of experience for visitors and as instruments of competitive positioning for territories. A strong and well-structured brand contributes to enhancing the international visibility of a destination, attracting qualified audiences, encouraging investment and consolidating a coherent narrative based on environmental excellence and the uniqueness of the night sky. At the same time, these brands foster a sense of belonging among local stakeholders, encouraging the adoption of best practices and active participation in the preservation of natural resources.

The Dark Sky Association owns and manages a diverse portfolio of trademarks, carefully developed to address different dimensions of its work from destination certification to awareness, education and community engagement.
