Dark Sky® Alqueva - The Founding Project and International Reference
Dark Sky® Alqueva is the birthplace of the Dark Sky® Portugal Network and a landmark in the global development of astrotourism. Created in 2007 by Apolónia Rodrigues, President of the Dark Sky Association, the project was founded on a pioneering vision: to protect the night sky as a natural heritage and transform it into a strategic asset for the territory.
Its implementation began with six municipalities that embraced this innovative approach. Over the years, the destination has experienced sustained and structured growth, now encompassing eleven municipalities, reflecting the increasing recognition of the night sky as a key driver of regional development.
This growth has not only been territorial but also qualitative, enhancing the depth and sophistication of the tourism offer. One of the fundamental pillars of this success is the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Partner Network, a highly qualified ecosystem that includes accommodation providers, tourism operators, restaurants and other local stakeholders, all aligned with a shared vision of excellence and sustainability.
This network is a truly distinctive element of the destination, ensuring:
- the quality and authenticity of the experiences offered,
- continuous and specialised training of operators.
At the heart of this value proposition is the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory. As the central infrastructure of the destination, it ensures, with high standards of quality and consistency, a set of flagship experiences that define the positioning of Dark Sky® Alqueva.
It is within this framework that activities such as guided night sky observations, solar observations and innovative complementary experiences, including blind wine tastings under the stars and sunset experiences, are developed, elevating the visitor experience to a unique sensory and interpretative level.
The Observatory acts as a technical, scientific and experiential anchor, ensuring not only the quality of these activities but also their alignment with the principles of sustainable astrotourism and territorial valorisation. In synergy with the Partner Network, it creates an integrated value chain where each stakeholder contributes to a consistent, high-quality and memorable experience.
International recognition was achieved with the certification as a Starlight Tourism Destination, awarded by the Starlight Foundation, making it the first destination in the world to receive this distinction. This milestone positioned Dark Sky® Alqueva as a global reference in night sky protection and astrotourism development.
In 2015, the project took a strategic leap forward through an agreement with the Diputación de Badajoz, enabling the integration of Spanish territory and establishing a model of excellence in cross-border cooperation. This expansion significantly increased the scale and relevance of the destination, consolidating it as one of the largest certified territories in the world.
The prestige of Dark Sky® Alqueva has been widely recognised through numerous national and international awards, surpassing 60 distinctions by 2025.
Particular emphasis is placed on the World Travel Awards, widely regarded as the “Oscars of Tourism”, where the destination has been repeatedly recognised in the categories of World’s Responsible Tourism Destination and Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction, accumulating 16 awards.
This consistent recognition clearly reflects Dark Sky® Alqueva’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and the integrated valorisation of the territory, establishing it as a benchmark of excellence on a global scale.
Beyond these awards, the project continues to receive recognition from international institutions, academia and the tourism sector, and is frequently presented as a global case study and a replicable model.
Today, Dark Sky® Alqueva is far more than a tourism destination: it is an integrated territorial development system, where the strength of institutional, business and community networks translates into a consistent, high-quality and distinctive offer, positioning Portugal at the forefront of global astrotourism.
Dark Sky® Vale do Tua - Consolidating a Development Model
Dark Sky® Vale do Tua represents the expansion and consolidation of the Dark Sky® brand in Portugal, demonstrating the Dark Sky Association’s capacity to structure and support new destinations based on rigorous criteria of quality, sustainability and differentiation.
Managed by the Vale do Tua Regional Natural Park, this destination has been establishing itself as a territory of excellence for night sky observation, benefiting from outstanding natural conditions and a strong landscape and cultural identity.
Its integration into the Dark Sky® Network has enabled the implementation of a strategic approach that combines active night sky protection, stakeholder capacity building and the development of innovative tourism products.
This consistent work has led to its certification as a Starlight Tourism Destination by the Starlight Foundation, reinforcing its international positioning.
Dark Sky® Vale do Tua clearly demonstrates that developing a destination under the Dark Sky® brand goes beyond certification: it is a structured territorial development process that creates new economic opportunities, strengthens local identity and integrates the territory into a globally recognised network of excellence.
